Magnetic Properties Evaluation of a Compacted Soft Magnetic Composite Core for Permanent Magnet Claw Pole Machine

Soft magnetic composite (SMC) cores exhibit different magnetic properties at different mass densities and heating treatments. Meanwhile, further mechanical processing on a compacted SMC core can deteriorate its magnetic properties. Therefore, in the development of electrical machines with SMC cores, using the compacted SMC core is very important. However, the required SMC core for the electrical machine is normally irregular in shape and its magnetic properties are determined by the corresponding manufacturing process. Currently, the measurement of the magnetic properties of SMC cores are generally carried out based on ring, sheet, or cubic samples, and few evaluations of the magnetic properties of compacted SMC cores with irregular shape have been performed. In this paper, a magnetic properties measurement system for the compacted SMC stator claw pole teeth is constructed and the sensor measuring field strength is calibrated. Last, a method is proposed to accurately evaluate the magnetic properties of irregular SMC cores.
