•The Fe-doped cathode exhibited superior catalytic activity for CO2 reduction compared to pristine La0.5Sr0.5MnO3.•The incorporation of Fe into the unit cell increased its size and facilitated the CO2 reduction activity.•Fe substitution improves CO2 adsorption and decreased the energy barrier of the rate-determining step.•The Fe-doped cathode resulted in an increased maximum power density in the Zn-CO2 battery.
