The dependence of accommodation processes on conversational experience

•Listeners accommodate to novel talkers’ speech by adjusting phoneme categories.•A bilingual listener may exhibit this ability in one language but not the other.•Heritage speakers of Mandarin showed no perceptual adaptation in Mandarin.•International students showed no perceptual adaptation in English.•Perceptual adaptation requires a regular supply of novel conversational partners.
