Integration of booster heat pumps in ultra-low temperature district heating network: Prototype demonstration and refrigerant charge investigation

•The performance of 4th generation district heating system with heat pump was experimentally investigated.•The coupling effect of district heating and heat pump operations was parametrically studied.•Exergy analysis was performed to identify the preferable district heating and heat pump parameters.•Design guidelines were proposed for the 4th generation district heating system.
