摘要

•ORNL produces 237NpO2 targets for 238Pu radioisotope thermoelectric generators using a modified direct denitration (MDD) process.•Material produced is initially complex aggregates with a range of morphological features, composed of a mixture of Np2O5 and NpO2.•The polycrystalline NpO2 produced via MDD has consistent microstructure, including particle diameter and sphericity.
