•CoMn spinel and Zn-substituted CoMn spinel oxides were fabricated.•Differences in reaction mechanism of acetone and propane oxidation were revealed.•Lattice oxygen activity and oxygen activation capacity promoted acetone deep oxidation.•High valence Mn species facilitated C-H dissociation and C3H7 activation of propane.
