Beyond noise levels: vehicle classification using psychoacoustic indicators from pass-by road traffic noise and their correlations with speed and temperature

•Over 2000 noise samples from individual vehicles were obtained using the SPB method.•Loudness, sharpness, roughness and fluctuation strength of four vehicle categories are explored.•Temperature and speed correction coefficients for psychoacoustic indicators were achieved.•Psychoacoustic indicators were used as features to predict vehicle category with good accuracy.
