Mobile 6G Communications at THz Frequencies Enabled by Leaky-wave Antenna Beam Steering

We report on the successful demonstration of a mobile terahertz (THz) communication system with symbol rates of up to 30 Gbaud for 6G communications. Considering the utilized two-level pulse amplitude modulation scheme and a 7% overhead hard decision forward error correction, an error-free data rate of up to 30 Gbit/s at a wireless distance of 50 cm is demonstrated. Mobility is provided by exploiting the beam steering behaviour of a photonically excited THz leaky-wave antenna. Within the WR 3.4 frequency band (220-330 GHz) a 90 degrees steering coverage is offered by the antenna. The experimental result are evaluated in terms of constellation signal to noise ratio and bit error ratio after applying a digital signal processing chain.
