•Bismuth loaded with camphor-derived biochar was synthesized.•Bi2O3@CLBC possessed a higher surface area and affinity for volatile iodine.•Bi2O3@CLBC exhibited a considerable iodine capture capacity of 885.8 mg/g.•The mechanism between Bi2O3@CLBC and iodine was revealed.
