•Nitrogen doped sub-fluorinated graphite with larger layer spacing material.•Simple and effective modified method without high temperature or pressure.•Fluorinated graphite can obtain a power density of 40.23 kW kg−1.•The dependence of cathode material structure, LiF and cathode swelling is provided.
