•GSH-AuNCs were found to accumulate endogenous zinc in the injured spinal cord.•A new mechanism based on the accumulation of endogenous zinc in the treatment of SCI was proposed.•Endogenous zinc accumulation stimulates immunotherapy.•R. The proposed treatment has memory therapeutic effects.
