Pregnancy in Patient with Cystic Fibrosis and Celiac Disease: the Importance of Nutritive Status

Pregnancy in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is of high risk. The main concerns are impairment of pulmonary function, existence of respiratory insufficiency, CF related diabetes mellitus (CFRD) and poor nutritional status. Our patient has all complications associated with CF, but also has celiac disease which poses an additional risk for adverse maternal and fatal outcomes. Management of nutrition in this case represented a great challenge that involved the whole CF team in our clinic. Close monitoring of nutritional status, especially with the use of bioimpedance, was necessary for the optimization of diet and therapy. Our patient gave birth to a healthy new-born, but even months after delivery the nutritional status is worsening with further weight loss. It significantly affects quality of life and remains the most important issue in future management.
