The authors regret that there was an error in the number of patients and the corresponding percentage in a sentence in the abstract. The original sentence in the manuscript reads in the Abstract and Methods: " 792,647 patients, 7491 (0.95%) experienced." The corrected sentence should read: " 79,264 patients, 7491 (9.5%) experienced." The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Over the lifetime, HZ affects approximately 20% of older individuals who have had varicella infection in childhood [1]. Virus-infected neuronal cells of the dorsal root of the ganglia cause both direct cytopathic damage to central and peripheral neurons and tissue damage via virus-specific inflammatory responses [2].
