Algorithm to Convert Power System Network Data from Bus-Branch Model to Node-Breaker Model

Power system network data are represented via Bus-Branch models for planning and operational studies. However, the actual power system operation depicted as Node-Breaker model is used only for specific case studies and special protection schemes. The increase in system complexity has been pushing the operators to use node-breaker models. Today majority of the power system test networks use Bus-Branch models. This paper gives an algorithm to convert Bus-Branch model of a network into its Node-Breaker model using incidence matrix formation. Bus-Branch models of IEEE 3 generator 9 bus, New England and Polish systems are converted to Node-Breaker models using four different station configurations by applying the proposed algorithm. The time required for conversion to Node-Breaker model with each station configuration is reported for three systems. The incidence matrix representing Node-Breaker model of system is directly used in transient stability simulations using Sparse Tableau Approach and the results are compared against the Bus-Branch model based transient stability simulations.
