Optimization of Optical Detection System for Partial Discharge

The optical detection efficiency for partial discharge depends on the performance of optical system. As an important component of optical detection system, light guide plays an important role in photon collection and transmission. Improving its photon collection efficiency is of great significance for the sensitivity of partial discharge optical detection. In this paper, the average irradiance of the light receiving surface and the field of view are used as its performance evaluation index. Firstly, the photon transmission path inside the light guide is calculated according to the optical parameters of the light guide material, and the optimization method for the geometric structure of the light guide is clarified. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to calculate the average irradiance of the light receiving surface, and the light loss and field of view of the light guide with different geometric shapes are compared and analyzed. The results show that the geometry of wedge type or double wedge type is more conducive to the low loss transmission of optical signals compared with the traditional cylinder. The average irradiance values are increased, and the field of view are expanded, which reduces the blind area of detection system and improves the sensitivity of the photodetector indirectly. This study has guiding significance for the geometric design and parameter optimization of partial discharge optical signal coupling devices.
