An off-line testing platform for the breakdown in insulating layer of 10 kV overhead insulated conductor is built up. The effect of voltage rising mode, insulating material, breakdown distance and other factors on the breakdown characteristics is analyzed. The influence mechanism of various factors on the breakdown characteristics in insulating layer is explained by Weibull distribution and Schottky thermal emission model. The off-line evaluation method for the breakdown of insulating layer can effectively identify the breakdown characteristics of different insulating materials and avoid safety risks.
