Wide-angle Metasurface Polarization Converter Based on Corner-truncated Square Patch

Metasurfaces have been widely applied for electromagnetic wave polarization trans-formations, due to their natural benefits such as low profile, low cost, light weight, and strong capability for electromagnetic wave property manipulation. However, most reported polarization converters to date are realized based on the different resonating states and responses of the two orthogonal linearly polarized components of the incident wave on the metasurfaces, leading to phase differences between the two scattered components for polarization conversion. In this work, we present a novel reflective metasurface cross-polarization converter that exhibits the feature of stable wide-angle response under up to 60° oblique incidence. The metasurface cross-polarization converter is designed based on the linear-to-circular polarization decomposition and recombination strategy, which first decomposes the linearly polarized incident wave into two circularly polarized components, then adds a π phase delay into one of the circularly polarized components, and finally recombines the two circularly polarized components into a polarization-converted linearly polarized wave. These functions are realized by using a series of corner-truncated square patch unit cells. The operating principle of the proposed metasurface cross-polarization converter is analyzed theoretically and verified in full-wave simulations.
