Abstract
•A 1D granular chain is simulated using ten closed-cell PVC foam disks.•The impulse vs deformation behavior of a single disk obtained from single-disk experiments plays a pivotal role in understanding the behavior of the entire chain.•Outlier disks in the chain influence a smooth distribution of disk deformations throughout the chain.•The energy the disk chain retains decays along the chain, and the decay rate is higher for lower impact speeds.
