Abstract
In this chapter we argue that interviews, as well as group interviews and focus groups, are appropriate methods for investigating collective memory. Specifically, we demonstrate how the interview overcomes the supposed collective/collected distinction that is prominent in discussions of collective memory. Further, we emphasize the importance of taking a relational approach to uncovering and understanding the formation of collective memory. We conclude by offering guidance to researchers as to how they can best employ interviews, group interviews and focus groups as a means to understand collective memory and how it operates within communities.
