Green oxidative esterification of furfural over nano-Au supported on highly basic anion exchange resin beads

•The prepared catalyst beads possessed the comparable activity as catalyst powders.•Au activated superoxide radicals and anionic OH− are key catalytic active components.•The oxidative esterification of furfural follows an oxidative dehydrogenation route.•The catalyst has the advantage of easy separation and recovery in batch reactions.
