Metal-Free Synthesis of -Iminonitriles via Visible Light Photoredox Catalysis

A reaction of imidazo[1,2-alpha]pyridine and Zhdankin reagent (IBA-N-3) is described for the synthesis of alpha-iminonitriles via visible light photoredox catalysis. A series of substituted alpha-iminonitriles were efficiently prepared in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. This transformation goes through a radical ring-opening process to furnish the corresponding products. Notably, the reaction does not require toxic cyanide reagents, expensive metal photocatalysts and excessive oxidants.
