Cosmology

When Einstein formulated his general theory of relativity in 1915/1916, it was believed that the universe was stationary. His field equations, however, predicted a dynamic universe, and similar to Newton’s theory, the gravitational attraction could cause the universe to clump together. To counteract this, Einstein introduced the cosmological constant into his field equations, which corresponded to a repulsive gravitation.
