•An end face pressure distribution model is proposed for twin screw expanders.•Errors are within 7.0% between the simulation and experimental results.•A parametric study is carried out for labyrinth seal structure parameters.•The clearance on the rotor end face has the greatest influence on shaft seal leakage.•There exists an optimal depth-to-width ratio of about 0.13.
