Toilet Training

There is quite some literature on toilet training (TT) in children, and yet many questions remain. Definitions, assessment, psychological and other aspects, training methods, and the outcome will be among the topics covered in this chapter. That parental involvement is a must, and how all involved can be educated and supported is discussed. Data on the urinary and bowel TT are included. Notable items include development signs to use as TT readiness signs. As TT runs for a more prominent part outside the family, the role of daycare is discussed. Postponement of TT causes many children to reach the age for nursery school untrained, with severe consequences. Bedwetting is dealt with separately, as well as special techniques used outside the classical training. There is no discussion on TT in children with physical and mental handicap. This chapter aims to propose well-funded guidelines for TT based on decades of research and experience.
