The effects of self-esteem and SNS Addiction proneness of undergraduate students on appearance appreciation

Objectives This study is a descriptive research to understand the effects of undergraduate students' SNS addiction proneness, self-esteem on appearance appreciation. Methods 131 students were extracted with convenience sampling from two universities in U city and included as subjects. Data were collected from July 10 to August 10, 2022, through an online survey method using Google questionnaires, in consideration of the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the characteristics of infectious diseases. SPSS 23.0 was used for data analysis and frequency, percentage, t-test, F-test, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression were analyzed. Results Appearance acceptance in undergraduate students' showed a low negative correlation with SNS addiction proneness (r=-.266, p=.002) and a positive correlation with self-esteem (r=.768, p<.001). In the regression analysis, Average number of days accessing SNS (weeks): Less than 6 times a week (β=.17, p=.001), Comparison of negative appearance on SNS: No (β=.18, p=.010), Self-esteem (β=.64, p<.001) appeared as a variable affecting appearance acceptance, explaining 71.7% of appearance appreciation. Conclusions In order for Undergraduate students' to properly appearance appreciation, it is necessary to increase self-esteem, prevent excessive use of SNS and negative comparison of appearance in SNS, and prepare a plan and education/counseling program to use SNS correctly.
