This chapter provides an overview of the properties and applications of forged magnesium alloys in engineering fields such as automotive and aerospace. Magnesium alloys have gained attention due to their lightweight nature, high strength-to-weight ratio, and excellent machinability. However, challenges such as poor formability and susceptibility to corrosion need to be addressed. The chapter focuses on the development of wrought magnesium alloys through forging processes to improve microstructure and mechanical properties. The chapter begins by discussing the microstructural shortcomings and defects inherent in casting magnesium alloys, which harm their mechanical properties. It emphasizes the benefits of producing wrought magnesium alloys, such as eliminating casting porosities, resolving segregation, and obtaining fine-grain microstructures. The formability of magnesium alloys is explored, highlighting the activation of additional slip systems at elevated temperatures, enabling complex shaping through forging. Three main groups of forgeable magnesium alloys are introduced based on their alloy composition: the aluminum-zinc family, and the zinc-zirconium family, with some reference to the rare-earth family. Examples of forged magnesium components for structural applications are provided, showcasing their versatility and potential. The chapter further delves into the characterization of forged magnesium alloys. It covers the establishment of a processing window for successful forging, the evolution of microstructure during and after forging, and the mechanical properties of forged magnesium alloys under both quasi-static and cyclic loads. The corrosion performance and protection of forged magnesium alloys are also discussed briefly. Finally, the chapter concludes by presenting an outlook on future trends in magnesium forging, highlighting the ongoing advancements and potential areas of research and development. Overall, this chapter provides valuable insights into the characterization of forged magnesium alloys, highlighting their potential as lightweight materials for various engineering applications.
