Producing Atmospheric Potable Water: An Overview

Safe drinking water access/availability remains a challenge for over 2.2 billion people worldwide. Atmospheric potable water production has recently emerged as a promising alternative water source, particularly for arid and land-locked regions. Atmospheric water could also serve as a good alternative to using expensive bottled water in post-disaster emergencies. This chapter provides an introduction to the atmospheric water harvesting technologies currently available, discussing the process, performance, energy efficiency, feasibility, and limitations of each. Given the active research and continuing developments in this domain, atmospheric water production has a strong potential to become a crucial component in our drinking water source portfolio.
