Introduction to Mechanics of Fracture

This chapter covers the basic theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics. First, the global or energy based approach to fracture modeling is described. This is followed by a discussion of the local approach, based on stress intensity factors. Aspects of mixed mode fracture are then described followed by an overview of dynamic fracture. Finally, the use of a phase field model to simulate fracture is briefly summarized.
