Modeling and simulation of batch and continuous crystallization processes

Solution crystallization plays an important role in manufacturing fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and many other value-added products. The quality control measures of final products of crystallization, such as purity, crystal morphology, crystal polymorph, and crystal size distribution, highly depend on many process factors (crystallization mode, type of crystallizer, etc.), particularly the way and the extent of the release of supersaturation. Process modeling and simulation not only provide quantitative assessment of the process but also enable the product quality control with the aid of in situ monitoring technology. This chapter will be mainly focused on the introduction of essential thermodynamics and kinetics of solution crystallization process, followed by the mathematical models and simulation case studies of batch and continuous crystallization processes.
