Uveitis

This chapter deals with the clinical features, various causes and treatment of intraocular inflammation. After discussing idiopathic anterior uveitis, the text is divided into three basic sections depending on the aetiology: inflammation secondary to systemic disease, inflammation secondary to infections and miscellaneous idiopathic chorioretinopathies. Because pattern recognition is so important in the diagnosis of these conditions the chapter is comprehensibly illustrated. Systemic conditions that are discussed include spondyloarthropathies, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, bowel and renal disease and sarcoidosis. Infectious causes (parasitic, viral, fungal and bacterial) are covered in detail. Uncommon inflammatory conditions of unknown cause (the white dot syndromes) are also discussed, including the various fundal and fluorescein angiographic appearances associated with these conditions. The treatment is covered, including immunotherapy.
