Applications of nanomaterials to build a sustainable agriculture system

The use of nanotechnology in agriculture has showcased enormous potential. Recent advancements toward building agro-products like nanofertilizers, nanosensors, nanopesticides, nanocomposites, and nanoformulations have revolutionized the agro-industry. Various nanomaterials have been studied for agricultural applications to overcome the excessive use of agrichemicals through the application of smart delivery platforms and to reduce nutrient losses through efficient resource management, for enhanced productivity. Although the actual potential of nanotechnology related to agriculture is not fully exploited, in comparison to other industries, the research is still in its infancy. However, agri-nanotechnology is capable of developing sustainable agricultural systems by mitigating the impact of environmental changes, enhancing yield, ensuring sustainable production, crop protection, and disease management, through better control over monitoring, evaluating, and managing suitable agricultural practices. This chapter provides an outlook on the potential role of nanomaterials in building a sustainable agriculture system.
