摘要
Although the risk of developing skin cancer among non-Hispanics is higher, Hispanics have a poorer outcome. Research on sun protection among Hispanic subgroups stratified by geographic region of birth is limited. Our study aimed to investigate differences in skin cancer prevention and sun protective behaviors among Hispanics stratified by global region of birth. In this cross-sectional study, we used data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) for years 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015. Hispanics born in the United States (US), Mexico, Central America, Caribbean islands, and South America were included. Hispanics born in different regions were compared to Hispanics born within the United States, which was set as the reference group. Multivariate odds ratio was calculated adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic variables using the software STATA version 17. Unweighted and weighted samples included 91280 and 179116430 participants, respectively. Compared to Hispanics born in the US, Hispanics born in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands had higher odds of wearing sun protective clothing (p<.001), but exhibited lower sunscreen use (aOR .87, CI 95% .80-.94, p <.001).
