Inflammation of the adipose tissue

Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of various metabolic complications. Losing weight is an effective strategy to reverse many of those complications. However, many individuals regain their lost weight after initial weight loss. Weight regain, even a partial one, reverts many of the metabolic benefits of weight loss. In this chapter, we will focus on the inflammatory responses of the adipose tissue during the development of obesity, weight loss, and regain and will explore the subsequent metabolic consequences. We will describe recent evidence from literature with particular emphasis on the role of adipocytes and macrophages driving the inflammatory response of adipose tissue.
