An emphasis on integrating learning in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) brings into focus specific examples of more general questions of coherence and relevance in relation to mathematics and other disciplines. By considering several dimensions both of relevance and of coherence in a range of reforms, this chapter describes the central role that mathematical modelling plays in transdisciplinary approaches to school curricula. It goes on to identify both the opportunities and the challenges that emerge in these reforms.
