Parametric Analysis of Phasor-Based Fault Location Methods Applied to Inverter-Based Resource Interconnection Lines

This paper presents a case-study-based quantitative analysis that aims to highlight the impact of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR) on six phasor-based one-terminal fault location methods. To do so, a typical system topology to interconnect IBRs to the transmission system was modeled in PSCAD software, and various contingencies on the interconnection line were simulated. Besides fault parameter variations, the assessments consider different IBR topologies, namely Full-Converter and Doubly-Fed Induction Generators, including variations in converter control schemes. After obtaining a representative set of scenarios for the evaluations, the performances of fault location methods were assessed using MATLAB software. Based on these performance studies, recommendations are made on the methodologies that return the lowest percentage of errors when applied to IBR interconnection lines.
