Organic Electrode Materials for Dual-Ion Batteries

Organic materials are widely used in various energy storage devices due to their renewable, environmental friendliness and adjustable structure. Dual-ion batteries (DIBs), which use organic materials as the electrodes, are an attractive alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries for sustainable energy storage devices owing to the advantages of low cost, environmental friendliness, and high operating voltage. To date, various organic electrode materials have been applied in DIBs. In this review, we present the development of DIBs with a following brief introduction of characteristics and mechanisms of organic materials. The latest progress in the application of organic materials as anode and cathode materials for DIBs is mainly reviewed. Finally, we also discussed the challenges and prospects of organic electrode materials for DIBs. With the continuous expansion of energy demand in human society and the increasing emphasis on environmental issues, the use of clean energy has become a focus of global attention. Electrochemical energy storage systems with energy storage and conversion ability are playing an increasingly important role in the application of clean energy sources, and electrode materials are of utmost importance in energy storage system. Unlike inorganic materials, organic materials with excellent characteristics, such as renewability, environmental friendliness, and adjustability, have been widely used in various energy storage devices. Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) with organic materials as cathode or anode materials which have the advantages of low cost, environmental friendliness and high operating potential are considered as new type energy storage systems with the potential to replace traditional lithium-ion batteries. This article mainly explains the working mechanism of organic electrode materials from three types: n-type, p-type, and bipolar type, and briefly introduces the characteristics of organic materials. The focus of this article is to summarize and organize some breakthroughs in the field of DIBs with organic electrode materials in recent years through material selection, structural design, and other methods. It is hoped that these studies can inspire researchers to solve the current challenges in this field.image
