Abdominal aortic calcium and geometry in patients with essential hypertension

•An automated algorithm was used to estimate abdominal aorta dilation and abdominal aorta calcifications in 293 patients with essential hypertension.•Abdominal aorta dilation on computed tomography weakly but significantly correlates with diastolic blood pressure.•Abdominal aorta calcifications weakly but significantly correlate with smoking history and resistant hypertension.•Patients with resistant hypertension have more calcium in supra-renal segment of abdominal aorta than those without resistant hypertension.
