This paper discussed the construction of a patch antenna with an omnidirectional radiation pattern. A conventional patch antenna normally has a directional radiation pattern. However, in this paper, the patch antenna is designed so that it gives omnidirectional radiation pattern operating at 1 GHz frequency with half of the size of conventional patch antenna. The omnidirectional radiation pattern is desirable as it permits the antenna to receive or transmit signals for any arbitrary angle over a full plane. It is done by using air as a substrate for the patch antenna. The reduction in size of the patch antenna is due to the addition of two shorting pins. The construction of the patch antenna is conducted in Ansys High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and all the related parameters are measured. Then, the antenna is printed and the same parameters are measured in the laboratory. The simulation and measurement results are then compared.
