•Increasing awareness of animal harm in the dairy industry elicited guilt.•Increased guilt led to lower mind attribution to and lower moral concern for dairy cows.•Increased guilt also led to greater intentions to reduce or stop dairy consumption.•The effects described were especially pronounced for those individuals high in speciesism.
