•Circ_0102913 is significantly upregulated in CRC.•Circ_0102913 binds to miR-571 and enhances malignant properties of CRC cells.•miR-571 and suppresses malignant properties of CRC cells and targets RAC2 mRNA.•RAC2 overexpression restores malignant phenotype of CRC cells.•High circ_0102913 expression in CRC is attributed to increased m5C modification.
