Anthropogenic material in pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) nests varies with local habitat features and between nest sections

•Areas in the environment with farms, houses and barns had more anthropogenic material.•Roads, footpaths and hedges did not influence the abundance of anthropogenic material.•Habitat features influenced the abundance of anthropogenic material in the environment.•Occupied nestboxes were surrounded by more anthropogenic material than empty boxes.•Pied flycatchers incorporated white and orange anthropogenic material into their nests.
