A late Carboniferous transition from subduction to collision: Tectono-sedimentary evidence from southern Junggar, NW China

•The southern Junggar Basin developed a forearc basin in the Carboniferous.•Two phases of a rifting events and an intervening contraction were recognized.•The northern Tianshan Ocean slab subducted bidirectionally in the Carboniferous.•The collision in the northern Tianshan area occurred at ∼306–303 Ma.
