•Ionic liquids-modified chloromethylated polystyrene were synthesized.•The adsorbents could selectively capture Au(III) in column experiment.•The adsorbents could effectively recover trace Au(III) from PCBs and gold slag.•The adsorbents provided a promising strategy for resource regeneration.
