Bentonite/cerium-modified LDH composite catalyst for catalytic ozonation of high-concentration indigo carmine dye solution

This research tackles the pressing issue of high-concentration indigo carmine (IC) dye degradation, where concentrations reach as high as 6000mg/L. We synthesized a novel catalyst comprising a bentonite-supported cerium-modified magnesium-aluminum layer double hydroxide (Mg-Al-Ce LDH) composite. Our investigation focused on the catalytic prowess of two versions of this catalyst in decolorizing and degrading the IC dye. Remarkably, these catalysts swiftly decolorized the dye solution within 20minutes and achieved an impressive 95% Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal in 60minutes, significantly outperforming the 50% TOC reduction by ozonation without a catalyst. Bentonite's role as a support material was crucial, bolstering the catalysts' stability in demanding conditions. This study heralds a breakthrough in high-concentration dye waste treatment, marking a significant stride toward eco-friendly wastewater management practices.
