Cognitive behavioral therapy versus compassion focused therapy for adult patients with eating disorders with and without childhood trauma: A randomized controlled trial in an intensive treatment setting

•Treatment studies for patients with eating disorder and trauma histories are lacking.•This is the first study comparing Compassion focused and Cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders both with and without a trauma history.•Both treatments are viable for patients with eating disorder, however Compassion focused therapy is superior in treating eating pathology in the longer term among patients with reported trauma histories.
