•Organic alcohols activator was proposed to improve CO2 regenerability.•EtOH was screened as the best activator.•EtOH promoted the decomposition of carbamate and converted it into ethyl carbonate.•The interaction between product ion pairs was revealed.•Reaction activation barriers were decreased by EtOH activation.
