•A hitherto undiscovered red CaLuGaO4:Eu2+ olivine is synthesized firstly.•The red phosphor exhibits high PLQY of 86% and excellent thermal stability.•A rechargeable portable LED flashlight is assembled by utilizing the phosphor.
