Field identification of drought tolerant wheat genotypes using canopy vegetation indices instead of plant physiological and biochemical traits

•Drought tolerance indices, principal component analysis and membership function provides means for drought tolerance assessment.•Vegetation indices were used to characterize water stress.•NDWI and CIred edge were the most important traits for screening wheat genotypes.
