•Pulsed laser ablation with tungsten target is used for initial plasma generation.•The time-resolved of the plasma is explored by both experiment and simulation.•The evolution of the laser-induced RF plasma can be divided into three parts.•High gas pressure and power are favorable for the ignition of the RF ion source.
