Chemistry Laboratory Practices in Remote Teaching

Laboratory practices are cornerstones in scientific-technological university degrees, especially in subjects of experimental sciences like Chemistry. The laboratory increases the specific competences associated with the corresponding subject as well as other transversal competences, such as autonomous or teamwork. However, COVID-19 pandemic has forced a dramatic adaptation of the educational systems to on-line teaching, not only of the theory lectures but also of the laboratory practices. Within this context, the laboratory practices of the module Extension of Chemistry (Ampliacion de Quimica) of the Degree in Biotechnology of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid were redesigned, comparing this work the three alternatives that were implemented over three academic courses: presential (pre-pandemic term), online (pandemic term) and hybrid (post-pandemic term). The results show that off-site laboratory practices rendered better qualifications and reduced the absenteeism rate, though the digital format was not particularly exciting. Due to the observed advantages, virtual laboratories can well be a suitable alternative to traditional on-site laboratory practices.
